Should You Rotate Your Skincare Products?

It feels like just yesterday I was working behind the beauty counter at a Walgreens when a customer asked me a question many people believe they already know the answer to. Is it true that if you use the same skincare products for too long, your skin becomes immune to the ingredients and they stop working? No, for most skincare products that's a myth. Your skin does not generally become resistant to ingredients like ceramides, glycerin, hyaluronic acid, niacinamide, sunscreen ingredients, petrolatum, most moisturizers. These ingredients continue to work as long as you use them.
What often happens when a particular product isn't working on your skin anymore is your skin condition changes due to a number of reasons. The seasons change, hormones fluctuate, stress increases, and skin naturally changes with age. The product may seem less effective because your skin's needs changed. Sometimes you've already fixed the problem for example, if a moisturizer repairs a damaged skin barrier, the dramatic improvement you noticed at first won't continue forever because your skin is already healthier. Active ingredients such as retinol, vitamin C, and exfoliating acids, reach a point where improvements become less noticeable. Once you achieve those benefits, the products shift from improving your skin to maintaining your results.
Sometimes using too many products can cause irritation, making it seem like products stopped working when the real issue is overuse. For someone with dry, sensitive skin, consistency is usually better than constantly switching products. If you find a gentle moisturizer and cleanser that keep your skin comfortable, there's generally no benefit to changing them just to "keep your skin guessing." The one exception is acne treatments. Some acne-causing bacteria can become resistant to certain antibiotics over time, which is why dermatologists don't recommend using topical or oral antibiotics indefinitely without guidance.
The bottom line: if a skincare product is still giving you the results you want, there's simply no reason to replace it simply because you've been using it for a long time. Consistency often does more for your skin, than constantly switching products.
