Why I stopped Using Primer and Switched to BB Cream

While most of us claim to have a skincare routine or know how it goes, even I was surprised to learn a couple of things, especially during the pandemic. When masks were all we saw in stores and at restaurants, complaints about makeup not staying in place were something I was determined to solve.

For years, I followed the traditional makeup routine: skincare, moisturizer, primer, foundation. But when masks became part of everyday life, I noticed my makeup still slid around no matter which primer I used. After a lot of trial and error, I discovered a simple alternative that worked much better for my dry, sensitive skin.

My current favorite lightweight moisturizer for wear under makeup is Clinique’s Moisture Surge that smells amazing and comes in a pretty pink formula. Most beauty articles recommend putting on a primer that layers on top of your moisturizer in order to create a barrier so your makeup stays on top of your skin.

In my experience, even my favorite primers didn't prevent makeup from transferring in hot weather or while wearing a mask. I found a method that worked consistently for me to keep makeup from sliding off my face. After cleansing, toning, and moisturizing, I apply a BB cream or CC cream and continue with my eye makeup before applying foundation or powder last.I like Clinique's Almost Powder Makeup with Broad Spectrum SPF 18 layered  over a CC cream because it feels lightweight and allows for easy touch-ups throughout the day.

This routine gave me better wear time than any primer I had tried. With a tinted moisturizer that has SPF benefits, layering a powder on top keeps the makeup in place and prevents sliding off. Whatever top layer is taken off, a light powder touch-up will do the trick.

The biggest lesson I learned is that more makeup doesn't always mean longer wear. For my dry, sensitive skin, a lightweight BB or CC cream paired with powder lasts better than layering multiple complexion products and primer. What works for you may be different, but this simple routine completely changed how my makeup wears throughout the day.
