SNS vs. Fabric Wraps: which is better for natural nails?

SNS may be stronger, but fabric wraps are often the better choice for clients who want to protect and strengthen their natural nails while keeping a lightweight, natural appearance. Today, most salon clients choose acrylic, gel, or dip powder manicures, which means fabric wraps are rarely discussed.
Fabric wraps consist of either fiberglass or silk material. They come pre-cut with adhesive on the back or loose material. The nail tech will apply a thin coat of gel resin and spray with activator on top right away to harden. If you want healthy-looking natural nails and your nails are thin, weak, or splitting, fabric wraps may be the best option. The fabric protects the top layer of the nails while growing them out.
SNS is a brand name (Signature Nail Systems). Dip Powder is how SNS is applied and there are other brands like KISS Dip powder and OPI Powder Perfection to give a couple of examples. SNS may be the better choice for clients who need maximum durability and long-lasting wear. Continuous thin coats of gel base dipped in powder builds the strength needed to keep the nail strong and keep the color you want.
As a cosmetology student, I recently completed a fabric wrap service on my own natural nails. I was surprised by how lightweight and natural they felt compared to dip powder. While they may not be as durable as SNS, they provided strength without making my nails feel thick or bulky.
Keeping the nail shape square is the best for strength and durability. Squoval is another good option to prevent breakage. Next time you get your nails done and know your hands won’t be doing any heavy work and you don’t want just a regular polish or gel manicure give fabric wraps a try.
Overall, both SNS and fabric wraps can help protect natural nails, but they serve different purposes. SNS offers superior durability and longevity, while fabric wraps provide lightweight strength and a more natural appearance. For clients with thin or damaged nails, fabric wraps may be the gentler choice.
